Feb 14th (Valentine's day) 2008, Matagorda Texas. Met guide Mark Talasek at Russel's bait camp in Matagorda @ 07:30.

Entered the ICW heading northeast to the first major cut into East Matagorda Bay (3-4 miles). Entered the bay and headed slightly East of South all the way across the bay toward the general area of Long Reef and Cleveland Reef. Water was like chocolate milk so we didn’t even complete that first leg but made a wide sweeping turn to the East and on around to the same cut we just came through.   Mark says that as long as you keep a sharp lookout for pilings or white pipes, a small boat should be able to run this end of the bay but the other end has a lot of reefs etc.  Going back West, past our original starting point we pass through the Colorado River locks and on down the ICW several miles to the general area of Mad Island Cut but we didn’t pass through the cut. Instead, we left the ICW to the right, entering what proved to be a narrow cut which we wormed our way through for almost a half mile, beaching the boat beside a narrow cut which proved to be the only exit out of a lake. The tide was outgoing and the redfish were visibly working that cut but we only managed to land a single 27 1/2 inch one before the tide switched. We only got to fish that cut a short time before the tide switched but I belive we could have done well there if we could have had current flow for a longer period. Mark called this the "Redfish Hole".
